Skills and Technical Education Programme-STEP organized and conducted a 10-day training workshop for TEVET managers in Dowa district in Malawi. The Management Capacity Building for TEVET providers was facilitated by UNEVOC, through a number of facilitators from South Africa, Germany, Ghana and Malawi.
The training started on 16th August and graduation was held on 25th August and its main objective was to build the capacities of those that are managing various TEVET institutions which is key to improving the TEVET sector in Malawi and any other country.
The training targeted principals, bursars and management chairpersons of all TEVET institutions, for instance, Community Skills Development Centres, Community Technical Colleges, National Technical College and Trade Testing Centres.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the workshop, the guest of honour Principal Secretary for the Ministry of Labour Mr. Joseph Mwandidya said to the managers that: “the ministry believes that good governance and management practices are expected to translate into improved service delivery, efficiency and effectiveness…
“the expectation is that you will now become effective and efficient managers… and the ministry will conduct frequent monitoring and evaluation visits to assess whether you are putting into practice what you have learnt”

In total there were over 140 participants and Mr. Majeed Awali Makawa a Principal for Sakata Community Skills Development Centre who represented fellow participants expressed their heartfelt appreciation for being invited to gain the skills. He said that the training will also have a positive impact on the performances of their respective institutions and asked his fellow participants to make use of the knowledge and share it.
“Let those who were not in this workshop benefit by sharing with them what we have learnt here… let me also remind you that what STEP, TEVETA and the Ministry have done is to give us the hook with which we should use to fish, let us use these skills” said Makawa.
